Shauna Johnson

I’m a nurse practitioner, wife, and mother. I’m running for State House because I believe South Carolina needs leaders who are focused on the real issues that people face.

Since I first set foot on Clemson’s campus, South Carolina has been home. After I graduated Clemson University with a degree in nursing, I earned my Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of South Carolina. After time in Charleston, where I taught nursing courses, and a stint in Atlanta, where I worked with inner-city children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and practiced psychiatry in one of the largest county jails in the country, I came back to Greenville. I now serve as a nurse practitioner in a nonprofit health company’s Department of Psychiatry.

We knew that Greenville was where we wanted to raise our family. My husband, Lee, and I have a five-year-old daughter, Max. We want her to receive a world-class education, get a good-paying job, and be able to raise her own family right here in South Carolina. Unfortunately, politicians in Columbia aren’t working to improve our quality of life – they’re focused on taking away our rights and debating issues that do nothing but divide us.

We deserve better than what we’ve been getting from politicians in Columbia. If elected, I will work every day to serve the people of House District 24.

ISSUE: Public Schools

Every child deserves a high quality public education. Public money belongs in public schools, so I will oppose any effort to send our tax dollars to private schools. Instead, let’s focus on improving public education and giving our teachers the support they need.

ISSUE: Economic Growth

We must support our small businesses and the good-paying jobs they bring to our community. I’ll support efforts to invest right here in Greenville and reform our tax code to ease the burden on working families.

ISSUE: Women’s Freedom

As a woman, a mother, and a nurse, I believe government should stay out of private medical decisions. I strongly oppose the near-total abortion ban that was signed into law last year. Instead of taking away women’s rights, our leaders should focus on expanding access to health care.

ISSUE:  Making College More Affordable

As a proud graduate of Clemson University (go Tigers!) I know the importance of a great education. We must make college more affordable for families in South Carolina. We need accountability for the recent news that the South Carolina Education Lottery failed to distribute millions of dollars in scholarships that could have helped students.

ISSUE: Protecting the Environment

We must do everything we can to preserve South Carolina’s natural beauty. I’ll support legislation to keep our air and water clean from harmful pollution. I’ll also support efforts to expand clean energy production, which will help our climate, our economy, and our wallets as utility customers.

ISSUE: Commonsense Gun Safety

I support commonsense gun safety measures and I oppose dangerous legislation that would allow anyone to openly carry a gun without a permit, training, or a criminal background check.
